It is a rare moment when a band or musician creates a sound that defies comparison – which is why American underground phenomenon Grizzly Bear have been on our wish list for some time. Creating a strange and strangely addictive sonic universe, the Brooklyn Quartet nonetheless and unexpectedly succeeded to attract not only a dedicated following, but also mainstream praise. As for a definition for their music, try this: ‘...located somewhere between psychedelic yet hymnal folk, layered harmonies that are ghostly and endearingly warm and fuzzy at once, Phil Spector productions, and sugar-coated prog-pop; an ambient realm of sea-drunk orchestral chamber music you never knew could be so addictive.’
With bassist Chris Taylor having just released his first and irresistibly groovy solo album as CANT – which turned out to be a grand surprise firework of sloppy funk – all the more reason to make a wish come true and dedicate our latest issue mono.kultur #29 to the prolific and eclectic musician, producer and master cook, who was even kind enough to share the recipe for an entire dinner with us.
In a beautifully relaxed conversation, Chris Taylor talked with mono.kultur about dreams coming true, why perfect does not necessarily mean good and the soothing sounds of motorcycling.
For this issue, Chris Taylor not only shared a dinner recipe with us, but also opened his archive of personal photographs for this issue. And since Taylor is a man of many talents, we thought it only appropriate to include a poster as cover to expand the world of Terrible into all directions.

“I’m really so flattered.”

“The best editorial ideas are deceptively simple, and right now English-language German culture magazine mono.kultur is my favourite example of beautifully executed simplicity.”
— SPD Awards / My Favorite Magazine by Jeremy Leslie
“For number 29, a nicely folded 28-page interview + 60x60 poster format issue, Chris Taylor shared not only his thoughts and feelings about food, salts, nicknames and music, plus a complete dinner recipe, but also opened his archive of personal photographs.”
