#16 / MIRANDA JULY: BEST AT BELONGING TO YOURSELF

“I ask myself all the big questions, every Sunday.”

mono.kultur #16 / Spring 2008
English / 15 x 20 cm / 16 Pages & Poster / Printed on Two Different Stocks of Paper
She has made films, she’s worked as an artist and performer, but what she really likes to do is write – and yet, no matter what, Miranda July remains Miranda July and that means unmistakeable. While she is finding it difficult or rather unnecessary to confine herself to a single genre, her work is instantly recognizable by a subtle charm and humour that can inject the everyday with a gentle and touching magic.

Born in 1974, the American artist has performed and exhibited in really nice places like the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim, but she also won the prestigious Caméra d’Or at Cannes Film Festival with her first feature ‘Me and You and Everyone We Know’, while she simultaneously wrote short stories published as ‘No One Belongs Here More Than You,’ and personalised the Internet with ‘Learning to Love You More.’ And that is just the beginning.

With mono.kultur, Miranda July talked about issues of authenticity, her early days as an artist and giving pep-talks.

The issue contains not only a particularly charming interview, but also a fold-out mono.poster #05 with some exclusive private photography and a message to you from none other than Ms. July.

“[Your magazine] is so specific because that’s so exciting. I like the idea that it is about one person. One is so radical.”
